About Wise Whiskers Training

About the Owner and Trainer

Sami Griffin (they/them/theirs)

I go by both Sam and Sami

Certifications: KPA-CTP, CBCC-KA

My path to training began in veterinary emergency medicine, shelter work, and foster care. I later worked as a behavior therapist alongside a Veterinary Behaviorist, supporting complex cases and focusing on behavior modification for pets with significant challenges. My speciality is pets experiencing big feelings based in fear and anxiety, however my approach applies to any training goals - including general confidence building, getting to know a new animal, or just adding more joy into daily life.

IIn addition to professional experience, I have lived with complex behavioral and medical pets and know how exhausting and nerve-racking it can be. It can be hard to know your best friend is struggling, to watch them be afraid of things, or to hurt other pets. My cat Charm was my most complicated teacher and still lives with me in memory and in tattoos on my arm. He experienced anxiety about many things, peed outside the box, was sometimes aggressive towards our other cat Sushi, and was extremely sensitive to handling. With him, I learned about different medical contributions, how to set up the environment and house for success, patience, compassion, and how important a support team is. My late dog Auggie similarly taught me what it can be like to live with a reactive dog on walks, how to support pets through anxiety with vet handling, and aggression amongst household animals.

Training Methods and Philosophy

There are a lot of words that trainers use to demonstrate what kind of approach. You may have been told to look for a trainer who uses specific approaches, these are the labels tha best fit my methods.

  • Force-Free

  • Welfare-Based

  • Science-Based/Evidence-Based

  • LIFE

  • Positive Reinforcement

  • Reward-Based

  • Compassionate Training

  • Enrichment

In general, I focus on meeting individual needs through learning about the individual pet and family, and working to increase agency and control in pet's lives while helping pet parents understand what those needs are and that behavior is always commcunicating something. My approach lines up best with LIFE and Enrichment Framework. I never intentionally use pain, fear, or stress. I never use choke collars, prong collars, or e-collars. If you are a pet parent currently using any of these tools, that is okay and I am happy to work with you to help understand you, your pet, and your collective needs.

Other Important Notes

Both Charm and Auggie (as well as client pets) have encouraged me to educate myself on how medical factors present as behavior. With my experience in veterinary clinics, with the veterinary behaviorist, and countless hours learning on my own, I am always looking for potential contributing factors, especially pain. Just like humans, the mind and body are deeply connected, and often pets come to see me and have underlying pain or medical condition that requires support in order to see a happier pet. My role as your behavior consultant includes looking for things that may contributing, and help communicating with your vet care team, and connecting you with professionals that I trust to take the best care of you and your pet.

I always prioritize human and pet quality of life. This means that I always discuss welfare for all, I strive to create supportive care teams that include your own mental health professionals, and other pet professionals I trust. We may also talk about all the options, including rehoming or euthanasia. I never take this lightly and am always honest with you. As someone who has chosen behavioral euthanasia when quality of life could not be sustained for everyone, I hope you do not ever feel judged if that is something that has crosssed your mind. I'm here to provide support for you wherever you are in your journey.

I acknowledge that I live and work on the stolen land of the Hinono’eino’biito’owu (Arapaho), Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute), Tséstho’e (Cheyenne), and Očhéthi Šakówiŋ peoples.
